The Tell All – Spa Etiquette

by Spa Snob April 12, 2020

Spa etiquette is paramount for not only your adventure but also that of other spa goers as well as spa professionals. I realized this a couple years back on Thanksgiving day when I went to ONE Spa at the Shutters hotel in Santa Monica. Their quiet room where I was told to wait for my therapist was beautiful but I was trapped there with a lady eating kettle chips. Each crunch tortured my ability to relax and I found myself ruminating on an escape plan. That is a more obvious reason etiquette is important but there are numerous others that can be very personal. And are you concerned about the appropriateness of voicing your opinion during a treatment? Are you wondering whether or not you should shower before entering the facilities? To shave? Read on my beauties!

Do I need to arrive early?

Yes! And you’ll want to. Allow about 30 minutes to acclimate yourself to the environment by mapping everything out, get settled at your locker, and making sure you’re not having your therapist wait for you. It is a sin to decrease your time on the table because of tardiness!

Should I shower before entering a spa?

My short answer is no. My long answer is that it is still necessary to shower before using any of the facilities or being treated by your Masseuse or Facialist. The reason I say you don’t need to shower before showing up is because they have showers for you to use when you get there. Why not take advantage of the amenities?

Should I shave before entering a spa?

Unless you are a Male about to receive a facial there is no reason for razor blades. Males with scheduled facials should shave the night before to avoid irritation. If you want to shave while you’re at the spa, most facilities have the tools you will need so go wild!

Should I keep my eyes open during the treatment?

No. It’s much easier to relax with your eyes closed and if you’re getting a facial you don’t want to run the risk of getting produce in your eyes.

Is it rude to tell my therapist to use more or less pressure?

No and in fact they like when you’re vocal about it! Everyone’s bodies and pain tolerances are different and it is impossible for Masseuses to know your sensitivities personally. Also feel free to let them know if the temperature of the table is not to your liking.

Can I use my cellphone?

No no no. If you must there are usually designated areas where you can use your mobile devices but in no way are you able to use them in the locker rooms. Use this time to unplug!

The Tell All – Massages

by Spa Snob April 12, 2020

Your one-stop-snob-shop for all things regarding massage treatments. This post will be refreshed regularly with more information – and aromatherapies.

Swedish Massage

This is the most classic type of bodywork and truly tranquilizing. It increases circulation prompting the ultimate relaxation with delicate strokes on the muscles and joints. Usually features heat packs and a blend of essential oils which bewitches the senses and leaves you feeling more energized.

Deep Tissue Massage

This technique is used to benefit stiffness by applying deep pressure into the muscles, joints, and tissues to speed up the healing process. This curtails inflammation increasing the circulation of blood flow. It is less relaxing than a Swedish massage but really loosens you up and will have a beneficially calming effect that lingers on days to weeks after you leaving the table.

Shiatsu Massage

This is a Japanese form of massage that pulls from eastern medicine practices. It rhythmically focuses on pressure points intended to let go of harmful blocked energies in the body and aid possible ailments.

Chiropractic Massage

This approach is helpful if you’ve had ongoing trauma on the body. Its purpose is to manipulate the body to remind it of the healthy muscle memory that existed before injury. It spotlights the attention onto the nervous system, vertebrae, joints, muscles, and soft tissue. This technique is also used to prevent pain that can occur in the body from the stress of everyday life. Sometimes gels that produce the hot and cold sensation are used during the session. You’re likely to feel sore afterwards but give it a couple days and your musculoskeletal will feel deliciously loose like it’s taken a Xanax.

Pregnancy Massage

This phrase is really used for any style massage done on a woman while pregnant or post pregnancy. Most therapists will use a pregnancy table to accommodate Mommy’s belly. If they don’t have these tables they will utilize bolsters and pillows to maximize comfort level. This is a great thing to experience because it decreases harmful hormonal energies and tames tension in the body.
